With the origin system that came into force with the 2018 vintage, the cultural asset "Styrian wine" is particularly strongly and clearly defined as a craft. Hand-harvesting of the grapes is mandatory and the focus is on local wines and wines from vineyards.

Quality from tradition
The Styrian system of origin
The vineyard wines
At the top of the pyramid of origin are the "Riedenweine". The grapes come from vineyards that have been specifically registered in the vineyard register and are precisely defined geographically. In the Rieden wines, the conditions of a very limited vineyard area with its special location and orientation, its specific soil conditions and its microclimatic peculiarities find their most concentrated expression. In these wines, origin and signature are condensed into a pure essence, they embody terroir in the true sense of the word.
The earliest possible sales date for Rieden wines is 1 May of the year following the harvest.
The local wines
For the "Südsteiermark DAC" appellation of origin, five local wine appellations covering several municipalities have been defined: One of them is our local wine appellation Kitzeck-Sausal. Under this designation, wines of the two leading varieties Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling can be awarded as local wines.
The earliest date of sale for local wines is 1 May of the year following the harvest.
The regional wines
The area wines represent the broadest geographical catchment area. The origin of the grapes must coincide with the area of the DAC region in question. In our case, therefore, the grapes come from vineyards located in the Südsteiermark DAC region. These regional wines are marketed under the designation "Südsteiermark DAC".
They are sold from 1 March of the year following the harvest at the earliest.
The history of our vineyards goes back centuries. As early as 1763, in the course of the Josephine survey, all the vineyards on which we now grow grapes for our wines were recorded as vineyards. Knowing that the tradition of these large vineyards was carried on by our ancestors in the history of our winery fills us with pride and is a mission for us and future generations.
Ried Gaisriegl
With over 12 hectares of vineyards, the Gaisriegl is the largest and most important of our vineyards: of all the vineyards, it has been owned by the family for the longest time and thus stands at the origin of Schauer's winegrowing tradition.

The steep slope, exposed to the south and southwest, is dominated by red slate and produces the house's greatest growths. This is where the grapes for great estate wines ripen: Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. They all stand out for their inimitable coolness and minerality.
As always, all work in the vineyards of Ried Gaisriegl, situated at an altitude of 470 to 560 metres above sea level, has to be done largely by hand without mechanical assistance. High up on the Gaisriegl is our winery with the Buschenschank and the guesthouse. Thus, the Ried Gaisriegl is the foundation on which we stand - the basis for our efforts and, with its terroir, the guarantor of qualitatively outstanding wines.
So the Ried Gaisriegl is the foundation,

Ried Hinteregg
Hinteregg - located in the Hintersausal valley between Kitzeck and the Demmerkogel - is a basin site oriented from southeast to southwest at an altitude of up to 500 metres above sea level. Above the slate rock lies a thick layer of loamy sandy weathered soils - a rarity in this area.

"Small but mighty" probably sums it up best! Some of the oldest vines grow on this vineyard, Morillon and Riesling were planted in 1986 and provide highly aromatic and complex grapes with a low yield.

Ried Höchtemmel
The Höchtemmel vineyard, exposed to the east and south and protected to the west by the Demmerkogel, is the birthplace of an incredibly expressive Weißburgunder.

Höchtemmel is a very small Ried on the Demmerkogel, with a south-southeast exposure, situated at up to 575 metres above sea level. The soils consist of red slate rock and the narrow terraces, which cannot be driven on, require purely manual cultivation.
Our Parade Pinot Blanc grows on the Höchtemmel vineyard. Awarded by the American Wine Enthusiast magazine as the best Pinot Blanc in Europe, it finds ideal conditions here to bottle an outstanding wine every year.

Theresienhöhe reed
A resounding name, a vineyard with a special reputation: the Theresienhöhe, the source of great wines with potential.

Brittle, shallow phyllite and green slate soils interspersed with quartz, muscovite and limestone deposits shape the mineral character of the vines. The southern exposure brings cooling winds into play, which guarantee an aromatic contrast to the sunlit ripeness. The grapes for the Sauvignon Blanc "Theresienhöhe" come from the vines here. Morillon (Chardonnay) also stands on this unique site. We let it flow into our "Schiefergestein".
The Theresienhöhe estate in Kitzeck-Sausal is situated on the western foothills of the Sausal Mountains. The well-known "Theresienkapelle" (Theresia Chapel), visible from afar, is enthroned at the top of the ridge. Our vineyard faces south and lies at an altitude of up to 500m above sea level.

Ried Steinriegl
Reddish, very sparse so-called phyllite slate, also known as clay mica slate, gives wines from this vineyard a very special, striking mineral expression.

With its exposed altitude of up to 550 metres above sea level and its sunny south-western or western orientation, sloping towards the slopes of the Koralpe, from which cooling winds flow down, Steinriegl also has very special climatic and microclimatic qualities. For example, even after hot summer days, it usually cools down quickly and noticeably in the evening. The best conditions for Sauvignons Blancs, Chardonnays and Pinot Blancs with a strong character.
Just a stone's throw below the church of Kitzeck-Sausal, which can be seen from afar, lies our Ried Steinriegl vineyard. Due to the steepness of this vineyard, the core is terraced.

Reed Sulz
It is one of the best-known and most sought-after, and also largest, vineyards in southern Styria: the Ried Sulz in Ratsch an der Weinstraße.

The Ried Sulz is located directly on the South Styrian Wine Road and on both sides of the Styrian-Slovenian border. Protected from the climatic influences of the northwestern mountains and situated at about 400 metres above sea level, Sulz's southern slope guarantees pronounced warmth and particularly ripe grapes. Opok interspersed with sandstone and conglomerates supports the thoroughly floral characteristics of the wines. By the way: It was precisely in this vineyard that the first Styrian Sauvignon Blanc World Champion wine was produced in 1990.
Sulz is another great location that
allows us to maintain our characteristic
portfolio of wines and to make ourselves a
to develop a winery in southern Styrian diversity.
